Steve Abrahams crowned UK Master Fitter champion 2012

21/11/2012

Auto Windscreen technician Steve Abrahams, who won the regional heat in Scotland/North East, has won the title of UK Master Fitter 2012 and gold medal from Worldskills UK.

In an exceptionally close contest held at the inaugural national Skills Show at the NEC, Birmingham, Steve fought off stiff competition from the best in the country to take gold. Silver medal was awarded to fellow Auto Windscreens technician, Mark Blaylock with the bronze medal being awarded to Darrell Edmed of AA Autowindshields.

Now in its third year, UK Master Fitter is part of WorldSkills UK, which runs national and international competitions, designed to showcase talent in vocational skills in different business sectors. WorldSkills UK is managed by the National Apprenticeship Service, in partnership with organisations from industry and education.

Steve, who works from the Newcastle fitting centre and Mark, who is based in Leeds, were among six top scoring technicians from the seven regional heats in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland competing for the title. The finalists were required to repair and replace a windscreen and a side and rear window, all within a specified timeframe and under the watchful eye of the UK Master Fitter judges.

Nigel Davies, Managing Director of Auto Windscreens, commented: “We’re so proud that Steve holds the title of UK Master Fitter, and that Mark followed closely behind in second place. These medals not only pay tribute to the fantastic technicians we have at Auto Windscreens, but also our superb support teams including Technical and Innovation as well as our fitting centre managers. I’ve always known it, and now it’s official!”

Maria Charlton, Director of UK MasterFitter’s official organising partner, the Independent Windscreen Academy (IWA), said:

“With the backing of Worldskills UK and our industry sponsors, this year’s final at the Skills Show was the perfect venue to demonstrate the exceptional technical skills required in automotive glazing. Many congratulations to our winner Steve Abrahams in a closely fought contest and well done to the other five finalists for making it such a great competition. The standard was incredibly high once again and all the finalists showed why they are ambassadors for our sector, which drew considerable interest from young people attending the event.”

Steve is pictured receiving his trophy from Timm Herman, President of Meritool LLC, a sponsor of UK Master Fitter.
